the tree fort
one of the first successful projects I ever accomplished
This must have been a summer thing. Maybe between 7th and 8th grade? Anyhow, there was lots of extra lumber in the shed/garage, and there was a riding garden tractor that I was expected to mow the lawn with. There was a wagon that Dad used for hauling stuff around that I hitched up to the little garden tractor. That was enough. The giant maple tree out in a treeline between two fields was great for climbing. It had a ton of branches shooting out in all directions within 20-30 feet of the ground and I found a spot where I was able to manipulate a couple of large broken branches (that were still stuck up high) and come close to making a level platform (or at least the foundation for one). So I went back to the house, and loaded a bunch of lumber a hammer and some nails on the wagon and started hauling my supplies out. I remember things going pretty well and within a couple days, I'd built a nice platform that I could stretch out on. I brought a book up and read a bunch of it up there in that tree just because I could. I think I worked on a roof at one point, but having succeeded at creating a stable platform 20 feet up, I don't remember really doing much more than dream about future improvements/modifications (the roof was rudimentary and really only the first step of more work that I never went back and finished). It ended up being a really beautiful spot -- there was a perfect vantage point to watch both the house and the driveway entrance out by the road. I spent a lot of time up in that tree during my high school years and there was really nothing to beat the feeling of sitting there on a structure that I'd designed and created.
