Islam
not much direct experience
To me, Muslims are somewhat "exotic" as they're mostly outside my own realm of experience. And so I don't think that's a negative (I'm actually sort of interested in knowing more about new things, so find that to be a plus). Obviously those folks who want to impose their will on others don't do much for me, but I'm sure there are tons of tolerant and open-minded Muslims. My view of the Muslim world (distorted by CNN, etc...) is that there are a lot of sub-groups that don't have great male-female societal standards. In most of these cases, it seems that it's a very basic power play where the whole society is in collusion to continue to make sure that women remain 2nd class citizens (as compared to men). This pretty much sickens me, but I also realize that I'm missing much of the context so I'm doing my best to withhold judgement and try to find a way to give the benefit of the doubt. But it's hard, because it sure looks like basic subjugation to me (from the outside).
