how micro and macro views affect that "striving" deal
from a macro point of view, there're a gajillion potential ways to structure any "society" -- but some specific strategies which seem to be successful are:
- "surround the geniuses with support" -- certain people have the potential to be incredibly productive, if dozens of people are willing to "surround and nurture" each of these persons, then it might be a really good thing in the long run
- give the citizenry a mechanism to improve life (by rewarding hard work) -- this is the "capitalist" way, though capitalism encompasses much more than this single idea
- compel/encourage the citizenry to work toward the common good
